“Last year I attended a convention in a city a few hours north of where I live. I was pressed for time when I made the arrangements so I reserved a room in the hotel where the convention was taking place. Seems simple enough, right? Staying at the host hotel meant I’d be close to all of the convention activities, but it didn’t occur to me until I arrived that it also meant I’d have absolutely nothing to look forward to for the entire three days other than those convention activities. Talk about boring! It also turned out to be more expensive than I had hoped it would be. The hotel room had a tiny refrigerator, but no microwave or kitchen utensils so it wasn’t really possible for me prepare any of my own food like I’d planned to do. I had to eat restaurant food every time I was hungry, and believe me, the choices near the convention were nothing to get excited about. Just your average urban selection of sandwich shops, burger places, fast food and pizza places.
“This year when I attended the same conference, I decided to get a corporate apartment instead. I was astonished to find out that it didn’t cost any more than the hotel room, but without all the hotel taxes and surcharges. And I hadn’t known that a corporate apartment could be rented for just a few nights, rather than a whole month. I’m self-employed, so cost is a really important consideration for me.
“It was so comfortable! The apartment I got was close enough to the convention center that getting back and forth was really easy. And I really enjoyed my time away from the convention! The complex had a beautiful pool and Jacuzzi, plus a fitness center that I used every morning. The best part, for me, was the full kitchen and complete collection of kitchen accessories like dishes and pots and pans. It really made my convention experience nicer to be able to make my own breakfast and lunch every day, and enjoy dinner out with colleagues attending the convention.
“I think it’s safe to say that I’ll book a corporate apartment every time I travel from now on.”
